Patrick the Pump!

Had the long awaited phone call today from the diabetic nurse that Alissa's new insulin pump has arrived.

Logically, as her current pump is nicknamed "Phil", her new pump needs a name.  She's chosen Patrick, 'cos it had to begin with a "p" and she didn't know anyone with that name already.

When we're at Bournemouth Hospital on Wednesday we'll be able to pick him up and hopefully learn how to use him - let's just hope he's not too much of a "techie" and that us poor plebes can work out how to get the best from him!

Fame on YouTube

And I'm now a film star!  Well, you might be able to see me on YouTube shortly anyway.

Alissa and her drama colleagues are working on a project which they are filming - they needed someone else to be the French teacher for the group, which is where I came in!

It was a whole bunch of fun working with everyone, and I'm told that the "takes" of me teaching the class look good - I'll be interested to see the final version - which they are promising to post on YouTube as so many people want to see it!

Balance Magazine Drops on the Doorstep

This month's Balance magazine has just arrived.  We decided to subscribe to keep up to date with the latest research and information relating to diabetes in the UK.

Two interesting points/articles:-

  1.  A thoughtful article on having mental illness combined with diabetes.  What a nightmare!  Here's Alissa and myself trying to manage and control her diabetes and we've at least got our full faculties (some would say otherwise ..).  How on earth would you even go about trying to help someone who was ill in this way to manage their sugar levels. Doesn't bear thinking about!
  2.  On the letters page, someone wrote in pointing out that most people belonging to support groups were not only Type 2 diabetics, but they were also mostly over 50, or older.  Also, that most of the adverts in the magazine were aimed at older persons.  Reading through I couldn't help but agree, few articles for insulin pumps, name tags or funky bracelets.

Brief moan - Alissa phoned last night and is thrilled that her sugar levels have improved having gone back to Uni.  How does that work?  She's been doing most of the cooking and choosing of foods for the past week or so?!

I put it down to the fact that instead of relaxing she's preparing for and writing essays - and recall that when she did her GCSE's and A-levels she was using more energy, so needed more food to keep reasonable levels.

One of the successful diet options that we tried over the holidays was homemade soups - full of goodness, no additives and a great healthy option.
