Diabetic Diet Information
Eating healthy diabetic food can sound boring.
It doesn't need to be - with much of the nation trying to eat a healthy diet, finding & cooking tasty
recipes is easier than ever.
Is there really such a thing as a diabetes diet ? Probably not, but choosing and eating healthy food can
make a real difference to your long term health prospects and daily blood sugar levels.
The key to any successful diet is making daily choices about the types and quantities of food that you're
consuming.
Why Am I Diabetic?
The increase in incidence of diabetes in many countries has been put down to lifestyle and diet changes.
The truth is that nobody really knows, and it's more speculation than statistics at present.
Healthy Eating & Diabetes
Cooking healthy food really doesn't need to be boring! You don't have to be watching your weight to want
to create a low fat, healthier deit.
With all those low carb diets, inspired by the Atkins diet, it's easy to find cookbooks that will help you
create a healthy balanced menu of recipes for your tastes & lifestyle and not take any more time in the
kitchen.
There's a wide range of foods and ingredients available - you can eat a tasty and healthy diet that will
help regulate your diabetes and your blood glucose levels.
When Alissa was first diagnosed I guess we were much like any normal family and hadn't really give much thought
to our diet or what we ate.
As we learnt more about the importance of managing blood sugar levels, we decided that if Alissa had to eat
different, more "healthy" food, that we would all eat differently as a family. What's healthy cooking anyway?
Initially it was difficult having to think and realise that we couldn't just eat pizza or chips any time we
chose, we gradually worked out what parts of our diet we needed to change.
Culinary Delights - Learning to Enjoy
Cooking again
I think desserts was one of the biggest changes - as we'd all had a history of being real sweet tooths, enjoy
treats like treacle pudding and custard. Instead now, we either have no dessert or choose yoghurts, fromage frais,
fresh fruit or tinned fruits.
I think we've also learned to become far more adventurous with our food and are taking a leaf out of the book
"French women don't get fat" which advocates eating less of really tasty foods to satisfy your appetite - we
can heartily agree with that sentiment!
Alissa’s Tips on living
healthily as a teenager
I now regularly have days where my
levels stay under 10mmols all day, and you can do this by remembering the following health & diet
tips:
-
eating long-lasting
carbohydrates in the morning
-
enjoy meat, fruit and vegetables
for the rest of the day
-
cut down on white flour
intake
-
cut down on fat
-
drink plenty of water during the
day
-
eat a variety of
foods
-
eat plenty of fruit and vegetables
- try and eat at least five portions each day
-
avoid special diabetic foods (they're just
expensive and of questionable benefit)
Don't worry too much about peer pressure and what other
people are eating. Think ahead about what you eat and it's easier than you think, once you store a few
favorite recipes up.
The key is to have tasty, freshly prepared foods and always
enjoy your food!
