Recently had an email from Brandin Hall who's recently been diagnosed with diabetes.

He's recently started a blog about how it feels to be newly diagnosed which includes some of the information that he's come across as well as venting his feelings about some of the crazy stuff that happens.

You can check out his website at www.dotdiabetes.com

Do you have a popular blog that you'd like me to mention?  Email me via the Contact Us page telling me a bit about why you're writing and what your favourite diabetes sites are!

The Importance of Healthy Eating for Diabetics

You've probably heard it from your nutritionist and your health team - but eating the right types of foods can really help to keep your body healthy and prevent the onset of complications.

There is nothing "magical" about choosing the right diet for diabetes.

In fact, it's probably easier to implement a healthy diet for you and your family, rather try and focus on one individual.

Recently I've been reading a couple of books about living longer by eating well.

The results are simple:-

  • eat more vegetable-based foods - and less meat and dairy products
  • increase the amount of omega 3 in your diet - through olive oil spreads, oily fish (mackerel, sardines, herring) and other foods such as linseeds (which contain an extraordinary amount of Omega 3 )
  • reduce the number of calories you eat per day - or fill up on fruits and veg
  • eat low G.I. foods - it's worth picking up one of the many diet books about G.I. just for this information (try second-hand or buy from eBay)
  • use olive oil for cooking and extra virgin olive oil for salads

Also, walk regularly - just walking instead of catching a bus or taking the car can increase the amount of exercise you are taking.
