A Diabetic Christmas - How To Survive The Holidays

Beautifully wrapped gift under the christmas treeAnxious about what food you can manage to eat this festive season ?

For years, we buried our heads in the sand and the result was high sugar levels and feeling ill right from Christmas to New Year.

Finally, we decided that the only solution was planning ahead.  We also started working together with our holiday hosts - a far better plan, the result has enabled us to enjoy the Christmas season.

So, here our key tips for not only surviving, but positively enjoying food this holiday:-

  1. Plan ahead - by finding tasty low carb & sugar free recipes that you have tried and tested beforehand, you can approach the holidays with lower stress levels
  2. Cook ahead - make and freeze several meals ahead of time.  If you do feel unwell for a few days, you can get back on track by simply taking them out of the freezer and voila! you have a meal ready to go.
  3. Exercise - well, a little anyway.  Even if it's just a short walk to post a letter, buy a newspaper, try and get outside everyday, whatever the weather is like.  (One of the reasons that you can poor blood sugar levels is that your routine has changed and you're doing less, but eating the same amount of food)
  4. Eating out - on those inevitable social occasions when you're eating at a restaurant with work colleagues, or at the homes of friends or family - choose wisely.  If possible, opt for a salad, or often the vegetarian options have lower levels of carbs, though you'll need to check.  If eating at someones home, ask for smaller portions of carbohydrates (that is, potatoes, rice, etc) and bigger portions of vegetables and meat / fish.  Drink plenty of water or sugar free drinks with your meal and limit your alcohol intake.

Hope that this festive season will truly be one of joy for you & your family !
